Travel Tips
Osttirol
Anyone traveling south on the Felbertauernstrasse will soon notice that this is a special part of Tyrol. Rugged, unspoiled, full of character, and with a landscape that gives you space. Space to breathe. Space to switch off. Space to arrive.
Here, hiking trails follow old smugglers’ paths, climbing routes lead through the Lienz Dolomites, and cycling routes entice with spectacular views. Those who come in winter will discover a quiet snowy paradise: ski touring, cross-country skiing, winter hiking, and ski areas without the hustle and bustle, but with plenty of space for wide turns.
And when the day comes to an end, the second great experience begins: East Tyrol’s cuisine – from down-to-earth mountain huts to award-winning haute cuisine. What remains is more than just a vacation. It is the feeling of having been exactly where you wanted to be.

National Park Hohe Tauern
In the heart of Europe, in the Eastern Alps, lies one of the largest protected areas in Central Europe, the Hohe Tauern National Park. The internationally recognized national park (IUCN Cat. II) currently covers an area of 1,856 km² across the three Austrian provinces of Carinthia, Salzburg, and Tyrol (East Tyrol).
The habitats from the valley to the summit regions of the protected area, which includes the Großglockner (3,798 m above sea level),
Austria’s highest mountain, are comparable to a journey from Central Europe to the Arctic. The
altitude levels of the Hohe Tauern are the root of this journey. From the valleys at 600 to 700 meters above sea level to the highest level of the Hohe Tauern with glaciers beyond the three-thousand-meter mark, the flora and fauna also change. Over millions of years, glaciers and rivers have shaped the mountain relief of the Hohe Tauern, forming longitudinal and transverse valleys, wide valley floors, gorges, cirques, and ridges.
Along the Felbertauern Road, there are numerous highlights and visitor facilities of the Hohe Tauern National Park, including two visitor centers:
– National Park Center Mittersill
– National Park House Matrei i. Osttirol
Around the Großglockner
The 185 km route between Felbertauern and Großglockner offers a square pattern with 3,280 meters of elevation gain. Four hours of driving time, without detours. Access points in Mittersill, Zell am See, Lienz, and Winklern. Unadulterated driving pleasure with views of 30 three-thousand-meter peaks, wildlife, and nature experiences. Side road to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the highest point (2,571 m) with a view of the Pasterze, the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps.
